How many generations has your family been egg farming?

Three generations.

Which family members work on your farm?

The farm is mostly run by me, but my wife and two children also help out around the farm.

How long have you been egg farming?

I grew up on a farm, but left at an early age to work in town. I bought the farm in 2007.

Why did you begin egg farming?

It was the family and being able to raise your kids on the farm which was the biggest pull back to the farm.

Do you raise any other livestock or crops on your farm?

No, I have focused all my energy to egg farming.

What is your favourite part about being an egg farmer?

I love spending time with my chickens and being around my family.

Why did you choose the production type you use?

Over the last 11 years, I have seen the market changing so I wanted to follow the buying trends of the BC consumer. This is why over the last 5 years we, at Janzen Poultry, are starting to move away form conventional production and into cage free production.

What would you like consumers to know about egg farmers/egg farming?

Farming is a 365 day a year job but most farmers including me love producing a safe, affordable, high quality food.

What does being an egg farmer mean to you?

After spending about 20 years in the retail sales world, our family made a hard chose to go into farming but it was the best thing we did as a family. It teaches hard work to my kids. Plus, it's amazing how many people don’t really know where their food comes from anymore. So, education to the consumer is almost as important or fun as farming itself.

Who is your feed provider?

We have been using Clearbrook Grain for the last 11 years that I have owned the farm, which is located right here in Abbotsford.

Who is your chick provider?

I use two different companies, HyLine North America and Pacific Pride chick sales.

What brand are your eggs sold under?

My Free Range eggs are sold under the Country Golden Yolk Brand and my Free Run eggs are sold under Island Eggs Free Run.

Where are your eggs sold?

My eggs are sold all around BC in a grocery store near you.
