You can find our farm in East Abbotsford. We have a free run aviary barn with 6000 Lohman layers at present. We started this farm in 2016, and have just welcomed our new flock in for the fourth time! We love the daily interaction with the birds while on the farm, and the chores that come with it. We look forward to many more years egg farming, and hope the next generation loves the farming life as much as we do.

Q & A

How many generations has your family been egg farming?

We are first generation egg farmers.

Which family members work on your farm?

I work on the farm with my wife, and our parents.

How long have you been egg farming?

We started egg farming in 2016.

Why did you begin egg farming?

We were dairy farmers for a number of years previously, and when the dairy farm was passed to other family members we looked to egg farming as a viable way to stay in the agriculture sector, and provide employment and investment for our children.

Do you raise any other livestock or crops on your farm?

No, not at this time other than corn or grass for silage on the dairy farm next door.

What is your favourite part about being an egg farmer?

Walking through the barn in the morning, seeing the birds grow and mature. Also when the birds start producing and the egg number totals grow in the following days and weeks.

Why did you choose the production type you use?

We had looked at many systems, and liked the fact that the birds have so much freedom to move around and perch on this system. Everything from the egg conveyer to the manure belts works very efficiently. My brother had the same system in Saskatchewan, and after picking eggs there a few times we liked how it worked.

What would you like consumers to know about egg farmers/egg farming?

Farmers love what they do, and are always looking to produce a quality egg. We love our birds and care for them to the best of our ability, as we really enjoy what we do.

What does being an egg farmer mean to you?

It means producing a good natural product for consumers at an affordable price.
